Does anyone here know why in almost all the Inuyasha fanfiction stories Inuyasha, Sesshomaru and Kouga almost always bite Kagome's neck to mark her as their mate? When did that whole thing start anyways? Who came up with that idea? I know I do it in my stories too. I just wondered how it all got started is all. I know it's probably a dumb question but I've always been curious about it.

I think Kouga actually calls Kagome his mate or something.

As for Sesshomaru and Inuyasha, all I can say is that it came from a fanfiction out of the early days of fandom that was popular and everyone started copying it.

I am guilty of following the trend, though, it's less about 'marking' Kagome and more about being able to cuddle, kiss, and nibble on her. Seriously. Sesshy demands puppy-kisses, and he likes to lick things or rather just Kagome.

I don't know why it started either, but I love marking. I have a chart in one of my journals about different marks, where the marks are placed, what they stand for and what they mean, and when they're given to Kagome. some of the marks even give Kagome special properties, like longevity.

I take marking so seriously, though I have no idea why. I just love it!

I'm very iffy on them personally. Sometimes I'll do it, though I try to make it original, but mostly I stay away. Marriage is good (bad) enough for me.

I have used the concept as well in my stories, however the reason I do it is because Sesshomaru is pretty much immortal and we can't have him married to Kagome only to see her succumb to her mortality as she aged. The bite or mating mark I would assume was thought up by a writer who wished to see Kagome live as long as Sesshomaru, using the act of vampirism to give credence to the mating bite/mark. That's just my thoughts on it.

I guess it is possible to lean towards the whole vampirism thing. If you think about it in most stories Inuyasha and Sesshomaru are nearly immortal and in order for Kagome to live as long as them they bite her. It's the same concept as vampires. So I guess that might have something to do with the whole biting thing.

Np lol, and yah I do find the marking thing odd. It might have come about in the early fanfics, I dunno, all I can think of is like HUGE bruise after being bitten. I mean if Sesshy's nibbling on her hard enough to make her bleed, i.e, to break the skin, Kags is either gonna get an infection, or a nasty big hicky. Yah I can see her friends prodding her about that...
