Friendly Farewell

Description:
Sesshoumaru knelt beside the miko silently. She lay in a pool of her own blood on the forest floor. Her blue eyes were dull and becoming dark as her life force quickly evaporated. His gold eyes glanced at Tenseiga but it remained useless at his side.
"Miko... you are foolish." He bit out thickly, his jaw clenched.
An unexplicable anger was boiling in his blood. Frustration and a nameless feeling that made his stomach churn and his chest tight caught the daiyoukai off guard. The suddenness of actually feeling something for the mortal girl before him alarmed and confused him. The priestess coughed in response, blood dribbling down her chin. She smiled weakly at him.
"Hai. I guess so. You always did tell me I have a tendency to do stupid things." She replied lightly.
Sesshoumaru's eyes narrowed.
"Now is not the time to joke, girl." He responded stiffly.
He glanced around him. A feeling of desperation was swelling within him. He wanted to grab the priestess and get to his personal healer's but the Western Lands were too far, even for his speed. The unwelcomed knowledge that he was powerless to stop the girl's death stoked the demon Lord's growing anger.
"Why." He demanded in a tight murmur, his deep voice ominous.
Kagome blinked wearily at the daiyoukai. His usually inanimate gold eyes were snapping with an alien light. His pale face was uncharacteristically tight and rigid as if he was attempting to maintain his infamous stoic countenance and slightly failing.
She sighed and pondered his question. Why had she sacrificed herself for him? Her heart beat in response. The traitorous organ seemed to have answered for her. She coughed again, the blood pouring down the side of her chin and down her neck. The feeling of being gently lifted and cradled against a silken pillar made her eyes wide.
She looked up to see Sesshoumaru looking at her as he held her. Kagome felt a sense of contentment and bliss begin to dull the pain on her swiftly shutting down body.
"Sesshoumaru..." she sighed.
He stared in front of him expressionlessly. He was not going to be affected by her death. She was only a mortal - she held no true value. She had merely been an ally; a means to the end. He did not find her intelligent nor amusing. She was nothing to him. She was nothing but a simple, idiotic, infuriating-
"I love you."
Her words stopped his mental tirade of all her faults. His eyes noticeably widening, the dog demon swiftly looked down at the dying human girl in his arms, her blood soaking his claws and white outfit.
His silence did not seem to affect her for she softly smiled at him and said,
"I know you're not one for talking so I'll keep it short, ne? I'm really happy I met you. I don't regret anything. I'm so happy I chose to come with you on this journey. I now see you... all of you and to be honest, I cherish every aspect I see."
Her soft whisper, like a butterfly's kiss, echoed in his pointed ears. He regarded her silently, his gold eyes roaming across her bruised and bloody face, his claws tightening their hold on her. The feeling of frustration was now being replaced by something unnameable and foreign to the demon Lord. His chest was tight and his jaw was clenched so hard his fangs were grinding against each other. Yet his flashing gaze continued to soak her up almost greedily.
Kagome continued, her smile still friendly and slightly sad, "I don't expect you to say you love me back. It would be foolish of me to think you feel the same way. But I like to think that we were friends and as your friend, I really hope that one day you will be able to open your heart to somebody."
A gentle breeze blew. His white moonbeam hair fluttered around them. The demon Lord stared down at the small slip of a girl woodenly. He did not know what to say. He was stunned silent. He watched her thick eyelashes flutter open and her sapphire eyes peer up at him softly.
"Be good, ne? Take care of Rin and InuYasha." She whispered.
Sesshoumaru murmured back, "Mi.." He paused. He had always called her miko. She had always been just that - an annoying human priestess. But for some reason now, she felt like more.
For the first time ever, his pale lips murmured, "Kagome."
Her name was surprisingly beautiful when he said it. He had always thought it was an odd, stupid name. It was a child's game and so he had found the lack of honor and thought tied to it as a sign of how simple and insignificant she was. But at that moment it was a truly beautiful sound.
Kagome's smiled widened. "You said my name. I always wanted to hear you say my name." The girl sighed.
And then she went still. Sesshoumaru sat there, the miko pressed against him, and a odd sense of emptiness entered him as he regarded her peaceful face.

Just a sad one shot I decided to draw. I'm trying to mix my style with the more anime version of the series. Sesshoumaru is turning out okay but Kagome... ugh need to work on her >.>
