Wistful Glances
Picture information
Description:
I was re-reading a favorite FF of mine, and was inspired to draw one of my favorite scenes from the story.
This is from forthright's Lord Charming, which you can find here ->

This was taken from chapter 288. I tried to take the setting from previous chapters as well, as the Western Lady has dressed Kagome in fine silks and pinned her hair elaborately using shell shaped combs and flowers to tell of the inu-youkai language of flowers.
I am not very good at such things, but I've tried my best and have used these flowers according to Hanakotoba, the Japanese meaning of flowers.
You have the white lily, which represents purity and innocence. A yellow camellia, which represents longing. Then there is also the spider lily, which is the closest I could come to for tragedy. It represents sadness.
In the Western Ladies Kimono, for her patterns I have picked peonies, which represent wealth, nobility, and ageless beauty. I've also used Seigaiha (the overlapping circles) on her outer wrap, which represent the ebb and flow of life. I've also included a river (kawa) on one of her last layers, representing continuity and the future.
For Kagome, I have chosen Sakura Petals, which represents new beginnings, renewal, and transience of life. I've included butterflies, as they are viewed as symbols of longevity and joy.
This is just a sketch, and it might be a bit blurry, as I had to photograph since I could not scan it. I plan to illustrate this one day.
Here is the passage from the story that I have used:
-----------------------------
“Isn’t Sesshoumaru-sama coming?” Kagome whispered to her hostess.
The Western Lady glanced around and carelessly replied, “Who can say?”
One by one, the lanterns strung throughout the gardens were lit, banishing the darkness of a moonless night. Biting her lip, Kagome searched among the festival attendees for the demoness Sesshoumaru had disappeared with earlier, but she was missing as well. “Where could he be?” she sighed.
“Oh, the possibilities are endless... and propitious!” With a coy smile, his mother suggested, “Perhaps he is finally putting his inheritance to good use!”
Kagome paled. Of course. The barrier is hiding him... them.
----------------------------------
