Prompt: “Why do so many things end in fire?” –Lemony Snicket (Sent by Darksknight)

…
Kagome whimpered as she stood on the hill overlooking the once flourishing village, which was now a silent bed of smoldering ashes.
Tears welled up in her eyes and she turned to her companion. “Why do so many things end in fire… and in death? Why?” she choked out hopelessly, sinking to her knees and covering her face.
All at once, Sesshomaru’s eyes widened before narrowing. His hand landed on the hilt of his sword.
No.
He pulled his sword from its sheath.
No.
Kagome looked up at him, her breath catching in her throat at the sight of his blade; tears ran down her face.
His miko…
Sesshomaru held Tensaiga in the air; it thrummed.
…was not allowed to cry…
He swiped his sword. A ripple of power pulsed through the air. He could feel the pallbearers of the netherworld fade away, could hear the whole of the village’s once-dead population take in a collective breath.
…over anything.
Kagome looked up at Sesshomaru, her eyes warm despite her tears. “Thank you,” she whispered, offering him a breathtaking, watery smile.
He would not allow it.
Sesshomaru sheathed his sword with no comment.

Well?
Was that as intense as I thought it was?
This is one of the few times I’m actually pleased with my work. It came out exactly how I hoped it would!
Yay!
