This One Shall Mate Another by Daveio

Chapter 1

Hi! I'm a long time lurker on this site, and while this isn't my first time writing fanfiction, I'm fairly sure this is my first Dokuga applicable story! I know there is room for a continuation here, but I'm unsure if I should write it, or how I would. Please let me know your thoughts on this, and if you'd like to see more! I'm also cross-posting this to AO3, so please don't panic if you see it there too! Please enjoy!

When the words left his mouth, they hit her harder then Naraku ever had.

Ten years since the final battle. Ten years since the Bone Eaters well had closed permanently to her.

Nine years since Sesshomaru had convinced her to leave the village; the village who had quickly moved past the odd girl trapped out of time. Nine years since she had seen Inuyasha with yet another woman, finally convincing her that he would never love her the way she loved him. Nine years since Kaede passed. Nine years since Miroku and Sango had abandoned her with their own dreams of family and legacy now that the wind tunnel was gone.

Eight years since Shippo dissapered into kitsune society.

Seven years since she became truly convinced Sesshomaru loved her.

Six years since they discovered that her final wish on the jewel had trapped her in time, the once mortal girl now an immortal woman.

Five years since Sesshomaru had convinced her that he would never leave her, even if she couldn't bear him a full blooded heir.

All a dream.

For the man who now stood before her couldn't possibly be the same man who had held her while she cried for her family that abandoned her, and the family who were yet to be born. The man who just said, 'This One no longer has need of you, This One shall mate another', can not be the man who promised her the world.

Kagome Higurashi, a woman thirty-five years of age yet resembling only twenty-five, stands from the low table in front of her. Her inky black hair now falling to her knees in gentle waves, complimenting her midnight blue silk kimono perfectly, a silver design of a song bird flying over a pond with the crescent moon in the background upon the back of the robe having been commisioned by Sesshomaru for the first anniversary of Kagome moving into his palace. An attempt to make her feel as if she belonged. She wants nothing more then to burn it.

"Kagome," he starts, his rich barritone voice betraying no emotion as always, only the use of her name showing the intimacy they supposedly shared. "This One takes no pleasure in this course of action. However, the council This Ones father left in place have  increased their efforts to see an heir be born." 'Full-Blooded' was of course left unsaid, it didn't need to be. "You shall still be permitted to live in This Ones palace. This One will not abandon you as our fathers bastard son did."

Kagome couldn't help the unamused chuckle that fell from her lips.

"You won't abandon me?" Despite the laughter in her tone, her deep seated rage is obvious, and had Sesshomaru not been as powerful as he is he would be cowering from the woman in front of him. "Then what do you call this, Sesshomaru?" She points a delicate finger at him. "You knew. When you first met me, you knew. When you first pursued me, you knew. When I accepted and you took me to your home, you knew. When you promised me eternity, you knew." She takes a deep breath to steady herself, unwilling to let him see her sapphire eyes fill with tears. "When you asked me to be your mate, you knew!"

She takes a step back from the table and turns to look into the fire burning in the hearth on the other side of the room, the flames keeping the room protected from the chill of the snow outside despite not being tended.

"You knew I'd never be able to bear you demon children, yet you said it didn't matter. That you still wanted me as your mate, as the Lady of the Western Lands. That you would teach the members of your court and the other lords to respect me and see me as your equal in rule." She steps closer to the fire to watch the black core of the flames flicker upon the pure white logs, the kind of demonic magic she had grown used to while living here. "You told me the offspring of you and the Shikon Miko would be more then strong enough to stop any dissent against me, and that you'd fight until your words were true." She takes a deep breath then turns back to Sesshomaru, the same black flames now alive in her eyes, covering the pink glow that always seems to emanate from deep within them, a sight Sesshomaru never thought he'd be witness to.

"What happend to fighting for me?"

The question was simple enough, and Sesshoaru knew what was needed to be said, yet he found himself hesitating for just a moment before speaking it, but no longer.

"This One has ignored his duty for too long," He continues despite her scoff. "To believe that a hanyou could ever rule the western lands was a folly This One dares not to repeat. Even if the mother is the strongest mortal these lands have ever known."

Kagome stares at the impassive face of the man she thought she loved, her wide eyes and slack jaw searching for any crack in his facade. Her reiki pressing against his yōki for any chink in his armor. But there is none. She shuts her mouth and nods.

"Fine." She says, the anger draining out of her voice too soon, leaving nothing behind in its place. "But I will not be staying here. I've lived enough of my life watching dog demons leave me behind to mount some other bitch, I won't spend another second of it doing the same."

She turns to leave the room, figuring that's the end of the discussion, planning to go back to her section of their quarters to pack anything she cannot replace. She does not know where she'll go, or even if she remembers how to live from the land, but she'll reteach herself. It'll be surely better then watching the man who owns her heart and soul live her future with some faceless demon.

Kagome doesn't make it near that far, however, a firm grip on her left bicep halting her before she's even two steps away from the fire.

"You have misunderstood This One," Sesshomaru says, a deep growl tinting his words dangerously, a shiver of interest running up Kagomes spine despite the anger and anguish running through her veins. "You will remain in This Ones palace. We have taken you under our protection, and you will not abandon it so lightly."

It took some effort, but Kagome shakes his grip off her arm, the flesh of his palm steaming from the power needed to do so.

"No, Sesshomaru, I believe you have misunderstood. I stayed here because I thought this was my home, because this is where you are, because I thought this was where Im meant to be as your intended. But if you're going to push me to the side like some unfavored toy, high on a shelf like a spoiled child who wants to keep a doll away from someone who would play with it just so they can't have it, you're dead fucking wrong." She steps away from him again. "I think you've forgotten that I no longer need your protection, I can protect myself just fine. I'm not the fifteen year old girl you first met, untrained and unaware of my own power. In fact, you told me it's part of the reason you wanted me in the first place! But I suppose that was just another one of your lies, wasn't it?"

Sesshomaru stands in front of her silently, unable to argue against anything she's said. Kagome scoffs once more and storms out of the room like she had been intending to do before, and for once in his life, he's powerless to stop her.
